Among the aims set forth in our congregational mission
statement is the goal of ministering to the needs
of…residents of the community and promoting peace and
justice in the world.
Toward those ends, we provide various kinds of support to
the following ministries at home and abroad.
Refugee Resettlement
has been part of our ministry for more than 20 years. During
this time, First Presbyterian Church has assisted two
families, one from Cambodia and one from Sierra Leone, in
making a new home in the United States. We are currently
helping a Liberian family settle in the Jeffersonville area.
Ministry to Transients
is made possible through our Local Missions budget. We are
able to provide limited help with gas, meals and local
public transportation to transient individuals and families
who come to our door seeking assistance.
The Center for Lay Ministries
provides groceries, rent, utilities
and other forms of assistance to needy and low income
households in our community. (www.clmassistance.org)
Haven House Services
helps the homeless of Southern Indiana with emergency,
transitional and other forms of housing assistance. (www.haven-house.org)
Loaves and Fishes
is a cooperative ministry of local churches that offers a
free, home-cooked meal each Saturday to residents of our
community. Our congregation is responsible for cooking and
serving the meal at Loaves and Fishes four to six times per
year.
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
trains women and men, both in the classroom and on the job,
to serve Jesus Christ in ministry. In addition to our
financial support, we provide hands-on training for
seminarians through participation in the field education
program. (www.lpts.edu)
Seaman’s Church Institute Ministry on the River
is a ministry of Christian presence and spiritual support to
"brown-water sailors" aboard the tow-boats that pass near
our door, on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers system. (www.seamenschurch.org)
The Veterans’ Administration Chaplains’ Department
receives an annual donation of Bibles from our congregation.
Through the year, chaplains distribute these Bibles to
patients at the VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Camp
Pyoca’s
summer camping and other programs give children and youth
the opportunity to learn about God’s love, the stewardship
of God’s creation, and living together in Christian
community. We support Camp Pyoca financially and through our
members’ participation in the Summer Work Camp. (www.camppyoca.org)
The Presbyterian Outreach Foundation
serves God’s mission by proclaiming the good news of Jesus
Christ throughout the world. Through the Outreach
Foundation, we support the following projects:
Mini-libraries which supply Christian lay leaders in China
with good biblical and theological resources, and village
schools which provide Christian children in Pakistan with
quality education and nurture, in the face of widespread
religious repression. (www.outreachfoundation.com)
The Christian Medical Center Hospital in Vellore, India,
ministers to some of the poorest of the world’s poor with
medical services and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We provide
scholarship assistance to students in the CMC’s nursing
program. (www.vellorecmc.org)
PCUSA Networkers Program
provides mosquito nets and educational materials to families
in Africa and Asia, where malaria is one of the chief
killers of young children. Through this outreach ministry of
our denomination, we donate more than 100 nets each year. (www.pcusa.org/pcusa/wmd/health)
Our goal is to devote a tithe (10 percent) of our income
received from pledges, along with other expressions of
partnership and support, to these and other mission and
outreach projects. |
